About Skylar Lathrop:
Hi, my name is Skylar Lathrop! I am currently 19 years old, and a Junior at Drake University. I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. I have two dogs, both of which are pit bull rescues from the Nebraska Humane Society. As for my hobbies, I enjoy spending time with my family, going to concerts, writing, and keeping up with media trends. In my spare time, I enjoy watching reality TV like Dance Moms and The Kardashians. When I’m not binging the latest season, I love taking on house projects and tackling new things. I am always down to paint a room or take on a DIY project, even if I have no idea what I’m doing.
As a Student:
Growing up, I did not have a traditional education experience. As far as education goes, I attended public school during kindergarten, then was pulled out of the public education system to homeschool. During my junior year of high school I began taking Community College classes and graduated high school with an Associate’s degree in General Studies with a specialization in Business Management. Now, I am a student of Mass Communication, Public Relations, and Magazine and Brand Media at Drake University. While my educational experience has not been traditional, it has allowed me to explore my passions and interests without the constraints of the public school system.
Why journalism? I have always had a passion for writing. During my senior year of high school, I took an english composition class at my local community college. I was convinced that I was a great writer, and that I would have no issue securing an A. I quickly learned that this was not the case after my professor ripped my first writing assignment to shreds. While disappointing at the time, I now look back on this experience as my greatest moment. Criticism was not what I wanted to hear, but it was what I needed most. Since taking that class, I have continued to develop my writing style and explore my passion for journalism. I still have a long-way to go, but I am so thankful for that professor and all that she taught me.
As a Professional:
I currently serve as the Head of Social Media Marketing at HOPE Organizing, a photo organizing business. This experience has allowed me to develop an understanding of media trends and how to reach consumers. I create weekly social media content, develop instagram reels based on trending audio, and create blogs and email blasts. This has been an incredibly fulfilling position, and I love watching the growth of engagement.
In the future, I hope to work in the Public Relations industry.
